Dean is a contemporary abstract artist who works predominately in the medium of acrylic paint on black cotton, this combination allows him to better achieve the multiple textures of his work. Born in Los Angeles California, Dean tapped into his passion for painting while attending Beverly Hills High School. He credits his art class teacher Mr. Sutter for allowing him to dive into and explore the diverse world of abstract art. While all the other students in art class were painting still lives Dean was in the back room throwing paint around like Jackson Pollock onto surfaces that looked like Mark Rothko. He continued his love for broad visual imagery by receiving a BFA in theater from the University of Minnesota. Again Dean went against the grain by opting out of the mandatory acting classes in order to create his own college curriculum for art direction. He saw the theater stage as one huge canvas where multiple layers of imagery were endless through the use of shapes, light, and color. The next ten years were split between managing the world famous comedy store in Hollywood and honing in on his passion for the visual arts. During this period he moved to Venice Beach, California where he helped establish the long running Venice Beach Art Crawl, and invited Sheppard Fairey to paint huge murals on dilapidated structures which can still be seen today. For the past five years Dean has resided in the wonderful and creative community of Nevada City, California and is continuing his exploration of the visual arts through painting and photography. Dean has found a team of emerging artists to collaborate and expand his mediums into large scale formats that are original and expressionistic.
